One of the main problems associated with urban waste management is environmental pollution. Among the wastes that generate the greatest concern are single-use polyethylene bags, widely used in supermarkets for the transport of products. Therefore, the general objective of this research was to analyze the decisions to use polyethylene bags in supermarkets and stores in Barrio Las Mercedes, Asunción, Paraguay in the year 2025. The methodology used was a field design with a mixed, non-experimental and cross-sectional approach, where 74 and 213 people were interviewed and surveyed, respectively. Among the main results, it is highlighted that the reasons for using polyethylene bags vary and can be classified into economic, cultural and social, practical and convenience and institutional reasons. Likewise, 86.9% of those interviewed recognize that polyethylene bags contribute to pollution and reusable, recyclable and container reuse alternatives are identified. 81.3% of respondents were in favor of a law banning the use of polyethylene bags and forcing consumers to carry their own reusable bags. In conclusion, decisions to use polyethylene bags in supermarkets and stores in the Las Mercedes neighborhood, Asunción, Paraguay in the year 2025 are determined by the situational convenience, habit and domestic functionality associated with the reuse of plastic bags as garbage bag.References
